The New Jersey Senate approved 29-4 this month a measure to expand the use of Smart Start ignition interlock and similar devices. The bill previously was approved 29-4 vote in the House and now awaits Gov. Chris Christie’s signature.

Smart Start is a leading provider of DUI ignition interlocks in the Tri-State area of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. More than 80 local service centers provide installation, service and support to ensure DUI offenders are in compliance and can keep their driving privileges. Another 1,200 locations nationwide support drivers on the road and travelling.

Ignition interlock installers place the IID devices into vehicles. Drivers are required to blow into them to prove required breath is at acceptable alcohol levels. A vehicle will not start until the readings are within the parameters of the state and/or county guidelines as stipulated by the court.

Currently the state of New Jersey requires ignition interlock devices to be installed from 6 months to a year for a first DUI offense, and up to 3 years on second and third DUI offense. If a driver is found to have a BAC .15 percent or greater, it also can lead to license suspension.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, Nhtsa.gov , in 2013 there were 10,076 deaths as the result of car accidents with drivers over the legal limit, making up 31 percent of the total number of traffic related deaths for the year. Smart Start ignition interlock devices – also known as DUI breathalyzers and IIDs – save thousands of lives and prevent hundreds of thousands of accidents and injuries each year.
